When Appeasement is Not Enough - Or How to Work Within “Government Time”

Saturday, 9:15am, Continental Ballroom

Working with clients to achieve sign-off and consensus is run-of-the-mill as you lead a large UX project. Our company works with large government organisations in the UK; their decision making process is laborious, consensus-focused and committee driven. Though this method of working is frustrating, most Government projects the deadlines are moveable and therefore the slow pace can be accommodated. But some of the projects we deliver are event driven and need to be launched on a particular date mandated by legislation or a promise from a Minister. We just don’t have the time to “mull over” decisions.

In this presentation, we will provide lessons learnt to work with Government organisations delivering projects on time, and how we learnt to work within “Government time”.

We will address:

  • Working with committees who don’t communicate amongst themselves
  • Educating the group on UX
  • Dealing with the “Internet expert” when they try to derail you
  • Getting sign-off when 20 people need to review
  • Appeasement of stakeholders - is this the death of good design?

This presentation will contain strategy and business lessons for those who work in the Government sector, work in organisations with silos and generally have to get things done.

Target audience
Consultants working with Government organisations, people working in cross-departmental projects, people working on Intranet projects.

Why this topic should be selected and why you are qualified to deliver it
Our organisation specialises in the development of large complex web applications for UK Government clients. Over the years, we have spent weeks gathering and managing requirements, designing interfaces and discussing site maps and designs with groups of stakeholders.

With 20 years of combined experience managing clients, we feel qualified to share our lessons learnt on working with Government clients, especially when they are striving to launch a web site to meet a Mayoral decree.
